Speaking of Triumphs, this one in Rome, right next to the Colosseum the arch of Constantine was the model for one of the structures in Terrus: Conquer the Clade.

I was intrigued by how each species in the city of Ungelian would behave were they to build their own societies in compromise with each other. The collective nature of herd animals would clash with those that were more independent. That tension I thought would be fascinating to explore with a subplot that would lead to a great adventure into the northern mountains.

A clever squire with a secret… Spur trains and studies with fervor, hoping to break free from the chains of Ungelian society and forge a different path. Born of nobility, caste and hierarchy repel this intrepid explorer, for the mystery of the wilds ever beckons.

Ah the noble pig, tis a magical beast. Exalted in the country I call home. Food is a major theme in Terrus: Conquer the Clade. I thought it would be interesting to have a protagonist who's always on the menu.

Obelisks were all over Rome - showing the influence of Egypt on Roman civilization, particularly from the Ptolemaic period. Miriam and I were fascinated by the diverse hieroglyphs and were inspired to delve into the history of the relationship between these two great civilizations. In Terrus, obelisks play a similar role, to establish the treaty set in stone and viewed from all over the city.

During a trip to the Vatican there were many beautiful maps of Italy that inspired ideas about a civil servant class who supported the bureaucracy of running such a city full of different species with different priorities. One main character in the Terrus novel embodies the educated and politically savvy inhabitants of Ungelian:

A brilliant young page to the Consul… Rebeca’s keen eyes see the fraying tapestry of power in Ungelian. Fearless, she takes on political corruption, thereby becoming both hated and adored. A true believer in the stability of the republic, she must choose between her ambition and her heart.

In Monti, Rome we did a mosaic @studio_cassio whose lineage connects to the great mosaics found at the Vatican. I made a wolf, of course, and found many great examples later when we visited Pompeii and the Vatican.

The conflict between wolf and cow was a fun plot point that I began to work with in starting the Terrus novel, Terrus: Breaking the Chain.

I find goats quite amusing. A bit stubborn, a bit fearless, a bit crazy. The first novel set in Terrus features one of these curious beasts:

Bukard
A bit small for the shield guard… Bukard’s dreams are dashed on the walls of his physical form. The glory of his heroes unreachable, he soon learns to adapt to his true talents. Honest, brave, and often rebellious, he follows his passions into the dangerous unknown.
